I went to see 2012-The Movie yesterday and I’m so glad that I did. Because I’m not nearly as concerned as I was, about people being frightened by it.
So let’s do a critical review under the headings The Good, The Bad, and the Farcical.
THE GOOD.
* Cinematography and special effects for 2012 – the movie -were fantastic.
Well maybe one or two of the 2012 scenes were a bit weak. Such as the scene which clearly looked like the toy ships in the swimming pool – which they no doubt were.
* 2012 – The Movie went for 2 1/2 hours which is a relatively long time. However the time went extremely quickly for me. I was REALLY surprised to find out what the time was when the theatre lights came on at the end. And I wanted it to continue to see what the world was like in 01 – 01 – in the year of our new world age 0001. But then the disaster movie would no longer have been a disaster movie because in the new era we will have a very beautiful world.
* I loved Chiwetel Ejiofor. Who you might ask -as I would have if I’d just seen his name? He was the “good-guy” and he was LOVELY. He played the part of Dr Adrian (Oh I can’t remember his last name). But it’s worth going to see 2012 – The Movie just to see him. Had I still been about 12 years old, I probably would see 2012 about 10 times like I went to see North To Alaska just so I could swoon over Fabian. If you’re under 55 years old and reading this ask your mother or grandmother who Fabian – is/was.
But with a name like Chiwetel Ejiofor, it’s clear the old movie studio days are long gone where they insisted on easy to remember names like Doris Day instead of Doris Mary Anne von Kappelhoff.
* I love a quote too, allegedly written by Jackson Curtis aka John Cusack – “The moment we stop fighting for each other, is the moment that we lose our humanity”.
THE BAD
Well just about everything else.
This was a REAL DISASTER movie in more ways than one. The disasters began within the first few minutes. The intentional movie-made disasters that is.
* It really was a melodrama in parts and I’ll talk about my belly laughs in the farcical section following.
* The storyline was SOOO predictable. Not because I am very familiar with the 2012 prophecies, but because it was just so predictable. After all, can John Cusack the star really die within the first 30 minutes? I don’t think so. So as was to be expected – the good guys saved the day. And the bad guys either died or were discredited YAAAAAAA. No real suspense at all. I mean this sure aint no thriller.
* The 2012 prophecies were only mentioned in about a minute or so of supposed news footage. This was just to give some context to the film and justify the title. After that, it was all just disaster movie like War of the Worlds, Independence Day - both of which were pretty poor. I was going to add to that list of disaster movies Deep Impact and The Day After Tomorrow. But 2012 the movie is NOT nearly as good as Deep Impact which had me in tears, especially at the end. And The Day After Tomorrow which I thought was really well done and far more plausible.
THE FARCICAL
To describe some of the belly-laugh scenes I won’t be giving anything away because as I said – it’s all so predictable. So 2012- the movie is based on a modern day version of Noah’s Ark.
* My biggest belly-laugh came when a Queen Elizabeth of England look-alike was running into the ark. She was dressed in a replica of one of the Queen’s outfits, complete with hat and Corgis. So here she was actually running to get on board. One hand holding her hat on and in the other hand the leashes of 2 or was it 3 of her Corgis. I was laughing so hard I couldn’t tell if there was 2 or 3 Corgis. I wonder how she decided which Corgis to save seeing as she has about a dozen or so. No Prince Phillip by the way, just the Queen. Now there’s a great line to follow the last. But as Australia is still a monarchy (can you believe it) with the Queen as our Head of State – I’d probably be had up for treason. Come on an Australian Republic.
* Equally hilarious was to see John Cusack driving a car with everyone in it attempting to escape from the disintegrating ground around. And so he drives through a multui-story car park and then comes flying out of the side of the car park about 5 floors up and continues to the airport where they will continue their escape. Crashing through the glass walls, which multi story car parks don’t usually have but the visuals were great, and then flying through the air also had me belly laughing. But as quietly as I could.
It’s now hard to decide which were the most humorous from here.
* The scene where John Cusack – writer Jackson Curtis – and his family were standing in the middle of the Himalayas and a whole mob of helicopters flew over. Under each helicopter was an animal in a big strong sling. Elephants, Rhinos, Giraffe all being flown through the air to be saved on the Ark. In reality I think that they all needed to be saved from the fear of the flight rather than the great flood.
* Another hero in the movie was a fellow who’d taken a few flying lessons in a little single engine plane. He helped to save the day by first single-handedly flying a twin engine plane that he’d never been in before. And then progressing to co-pilot a big Russian Antanov.
* Whilst with the flying – if you could indeed fly the twin engine plane – and everything around you was collapsing surely the first thing you’d do would be to get as much altitude as possible. No this bloke kept flying at only a few hundred feet so he could fly past and dodge the falling buildings. Come On Now
* I could give you a few more of these hilarious scenes. But I’ll leave those for you to discover on your own.
If you like entertaining disaster movies then go see 2012 – the movie.
I’m glad I saw it.
I’m glad I got to know Chiwetel Ejiofor. I only wish I knew how to pronounce his name.
And as I said the time went very quickly for me, so it was obviously entertaining in it’s own corny, melodramatic way.

Thanks for the review. I really go for the John Cusack movies. generally he has pretty good discretion when selecting films, so I’ll probably go see this one (or maybe wait for dvd) You are right on the money with predictable, but well, we like the heroes being heroes, and minor characters can die in the glorious fight.
now the real 2012. Don’t see much changing, certainly not catastrophic anyway. I always hope that someday common sense will conquer.
